Classic Reads

I am putting together a list of classic books which we have available in the Library which many of our children might be interested in.

I know I have a number of children, in Year 4 especially, who are always looking for classics to read, and so I have decided to compile a list which will help them when they are looking for a new book.

What is great is that some of the books we have in a number of different formats, so the story can be reached by a larger number of children.

This is what I have put together so far...

Weeks 9 and 10 - Animal Extravaganza

GRRRRRR....
WOOOOF!
MIAAOWWWWW!
Squeeeeeak...

Over the last two weeks of term, we have a whole host of new and amazing animal books in the library.

In Week 9 the focus is on non-fiction, and so you can find out about spiders, sharks, reptiles, birds, whales, polar animals, predators, garden wildlife, desert wildlife, freshwater wildlife, kittens, zebras, elephants, snakes, mini-beasts and more....

In Week 10, the focus shifts to some fabulous fiction about animals.

Highlights for me have been these books...

The Rover Adventures by Roddy Doyle is a collection of three hilarious stories featuring wonderdog Rover.  The first is a masterfully told tale of a man about to step in a dog poo... which Doyle manages to stretch out to close to 100 pages.  Fantastic!

Uncle Trev and his Whistling Bull by Jack Lasenby harks back to the good old days of New Zealand farming in the 1930s, when life was simpler and a good yarn was the order of the day.  Uncle Trev is a hard case old fella who likes to tell his sick nephew all sorts of fabulous stories... much to the disgust of the sick boy's mother!
The first story involves the whistling bull... and it just gets better from there!  If you like Barry Crump, give this a go!

The Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman is a sophisticated picture book which deserves to become a classic.  Gaiman can weave a magical tale and the illustrations by Dave McKean add a sinister and yet slightly humorous atmosphere.
Lucy is convinced that she can hear wolves in the walls of her house, but her family are adamant that she is hearing things!  How wrong they are...

Old MacDonald's Farm, illustrated by New Zealand illustrator Donovan Bixley, puts a lovely kiwi spin on this old classic.  Littlies will love this one!

And that is only the start of the books which will be available!
ENJOY!
