Week 8 – Digging up the Past: Dinosaurs and More!

We decided that we needed to have a Dinosaur Week in the Library this term because we have so many dinosaur books coming into the Library.  Dinosaurs are just eternally popular!
These books below are just a selection of the dinosaur related books which will be on the prowl next week...

And speaking of extinct animals, we have this amazing sophisticated picture book to enjoy, all about animals who have lost their battle with evolution! There are animals in this book that I have never heard of... It is a gem!

But, although dinosaurs appeal to many children, they are not everyone’s cup of tea, so we decided to widen the focus and we also have some fabulous historical books which look at past events and create a story around them.

My two favourites have to be the Michael Morpurgo reprints, Outlaw (based on Robin Hood) and Sparrow (based on Joan of Arc.)  Michael Morpurgo has a magic pen and he manages to create wonderful stories with such apparent ease.

For the seniors there is this fascinating book of second world war stories...

There is this book about Julius Caesar, from the Before They Were Famous series...

There is even a couple of Geronimo Stiltons to enjoy, including this one, set in Scotland...

ENJOY!!!!

Week 7 - The People's Choice!

Week 7 in the Library features a whole PILE of books which have been requested by students.

The Southwell students are lucky to be able to make requests through the Book-a-Book book, and we try and buy what we can, when we can.

Here is just a small selection of what will be on offer next week...

PICTURE BOOKS:

SOPHISTICATED PICTURE BOOKS:

FUN READS (red dots):

POPULAR PAPERBACKS (yellow dots):

GENERAL FICTION:

as well as some republished Enid Blyton favourites... Malory Towers and The O'Sullivan Twins.
Malory Towers were one of my favourite series as a child, so I am very excited to see them coming to the library!

SENIOR FICTION:

Don't Judge a Girl by Her Cover

My picks would have to be:

Zen Shorts
A beautiful, peaceful book of short meditations to puzzle over and think about.

Addie Accident

Don't judge a book by its cover...!  This cover is a mystery as I don't actually remember a butterfly, or a reference to a butterfly, in this story!
I believe this story would appeal to boys and girls... all about an accident prone young lady, who doesn't believe in herself, until she meets an imaginary friend called Hubert, who seems even more accident prone than her!

Week 6 - International Languages Week

Bonjour!
Ni Hau!
Namaste!
Kamusta!

Week 6 is International Languages Week and the Library is celebrating all week with a cool display, lunchtime activities and some fabulous new language and cook books.

We have books which are fabulous for the juniors - or even older students who want to give a new language a go...

We also have books about different cultures...

... and books about different clothes from all over the world...

... there is this lovely book about being different, which included a whole range of interesting languages, some of which I had never heard of (Nahuatl being one!)

My First Car Was Red  may not seem to fit into this theme... until you look inside and see that there are lots of road signs... a kind of language in itself!

And finally... we have four new books in the ever-popular I Can Cook series...
These are beautiful, child-friendly cook books and they certainly inspire even a non-cook like myself to give a recipe a go!!

Week 5 - Countries of the World

I love looking at atlases and books about countries and maps.

This week in the Library is all about countries of the world, which fits in nicely with the Olympics which has just been and gone (and, WOW what a great two weeks of sport!) and also with the upcoming International Languages Week in Week 6.

We have a myriad of books about different countries, ranging from Ireland to Brazil to Egypt to Pakistan to Canada.

We also have a series of fabulous mapping books, which look at different kinds of maps and how they are made and used.

Country MapsLand and Sea MapsWorld Maps

And, of course, we have a couple of gorgeous children's atlases, which include flags and plenty of information about every country in the world.  So... if you were fascinated by the Mongolian wrestling team in the Olympics, you can find out where Mongolia is; or if you want to find out where Usain Bolt and his speedy friends are from, you can check out Jamaica and see where it is on the globe!  I for one will be checking out Uzbekistan...
